Across the country striking BT and Openreach workers have received a remarkable level of public, political and wider trade union movement support at hundreds of CWU picket lines across the country.
Far from experiencing negativity, public anger or criticism, CWU activists and branches have reported an extraordinary outpouring of solidarity for the union’s stand as around 40,000 BT Group employees took part in the first national strike in BT since 1987.

Around 40,000 CWU members across BT and Openreach are delivering the starkest of wake-up calls to the BT Group Board – downing tools en-masse today in a historic display of disgust at management’s blatant contempt for workers and customers alike.
Responding to BT Group’s quarterly results, and speaking ahead of BT Group strikes tomorrow (Friday 29th July) and Monday (1st August), CWU General Secretary Dave Ward said: “BT Group are now gaslighting our members.
BT recorded £2 billion in profits before tax last year. Its CEO, Philip Jansen, enjoyed a salary of £3.5 million. Yet it’s now offering engineers & call centre workers a real terms pay CUT.

Over 40,000 BT Group workers have announced a two-day national strike against real-terms pay cuts, as their union claim that greedy bosses have “stuck two fingers up” to key workers.
The Communication Workers Union (CWU) – which represents BT Group workers – has today (Friday 15th July) served notice for strike action that will take place on Friday 29th July and Monday 1st August.
A major shake-up of cleaning arrangements at BT sites across the country is being robustly challenged by the union amid concerns that longer-serving full-time housekeepers who worked flat out through the pandemic to keep fellow workers safe are disproportionately likely to be negatively impacted.
CWU members across BT Group have delivered an overwhelming message of disgust and defiance to their bosses, voting by well over nine-to-one to reject real-term pay cuts in every part of the business.
Onerous legal thresholds, designed to make it as hard as possible for workers to withdraw their labour under the UK’s notoriously anti-union employment law, weren’t just exceeded but positively smashed in Openreach and BT.
